Introducing Islamic religious studies in schools

Children of the Muslim faith should receive Islamic religious studies lessons in German at state schools. Pilot projects have been running for some years now. The German Islam Conference (DIK) has developed recommendations on the requirements to be fulfilled to allow such lessons to be introduced in schools without delay.

Mosque in Duisburg-Marxloh

Mosques in Cologne-Ehrenfeld and Duisburg-Marxloh

In October 2008, after a construction period of just four years, the Merkez (Central) Mosque was inaugurated in Marxloh. The laying of the foundation stone for the Central Mosque of Cologne was scheduled for autumn of this year. Whilst the mosque project in Duisburg ran smoothly from the outset, the one in Cologne, on the other hand, was beset by protests.
