Every year, the Day of the Open Mosque on 3 October offers a down-to-earth insight into Muslim life in Germany. Our photo gallery conveys an initial impression.

Day of the Open Mosque

Every year on 3 October, more than a thousand mosques invite visitors in on the Day of the Open Mosque. It was a conscious decision to choose the Day of German Unity for this event as it is intended to emphasise the extent to which Muslims belong to the united Germany.

Mosque in Duisburg-Marxloh

Mosques in Cologne-Ehrenfeld and Duisburg-Marxloh

In October 2008, after a construction period of just four years, the Merkez (Central) Mosque was inaugurated in Marxloh. The laying of the foundation stone for the Central Mosque of Cologne was scheduled for autumn of this year. Whilst the mosque project in Duisburg ran smoothly from the outset, the one in Cologne, on the other hand, was beset by protests.
