Deutsche Islam Konferenz (DIK)

Objectives

The fundamental aim of the German Islam Conference (DIK) is to maintain a regular and ongoing dialogue between all levels of government and Muslims and their representatives in Germany. The Conference has always also sought understanding and solutions for specific issues and to inform the public about Muslim life in Germany. By encouraging an Islam in, from and for Germany, the Conference seeks to strengthen social cohesion.

Focus areas

Based on the recommendations and fundamental common goals agreed on in its earlier phases, the German Islam Conference (DIK) is currently focusing on various areas. Its action in these areas is practice-oriented, boosting efforts to improve interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims, among Muslims themselves, and between mosque congregations and their neighbourhoods. The Conference also promotes cooperation between the state and Muslim communities based on Germany’s constitutional law applicable to religious organisations.

Organisation

The German Islam Conference (DIK) uses thematic, variable and flexible formats, for example expert conferences, policy dialogues and workshops. The Conference encompasses a broad range of diverse participants, including Muslim national and umbrella organisations, new initiatives and associations outside of traditional mosque structures, individual Muslims, representatives of the federal, state and local governments, as well as representatives of the Christian churches, the Jewish community, academics and practitioners.

"Driving the discussion of policy issues related to Islam"

A new phase of the German Islam Conference (DIK) was officially launched on 7 December. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser opened the kick-off event in Berlin. It was attended by some 160 people representing Germany’s diverse Muslim community, federal ministries, federal states, municipalities, Christian churches, the Jewish community, the academic community and other areas of society.

Islamkolleg in Osnabrück celebrates start of training

On 15 June 2021, the Islamkolleg Deutschland e.V. (IKD) in Osnabrück held an official ceremony to launch its German-language training in Islamic theology for religious leaders and staff of Muslim congregations. The Islamkolleg's training programme receives funding from the German Islam Conference (DIK).

2025.09.17 DIK expert conference on Islamic chaplaincy

The expert conference entitled "Seeing, accompanying and supporting the individual – Islamic chaplaincy in the armed forces, prisons and hospitals" took place in Nuremberg with a wide range of participants. Representatives from Muslim and non-Muslim organisations as well as from politics, academia and administration who are involved in this field of activity were in attendance.

2024.11.18 DIK expert conference on the training of religious staff in Germany’s Islamic communities and publication of a DIK guide for recognition of qualification programmes and careers in this field

This expert conference saw representatives of Muslim communities, government agencies, political offices, academia, civil society and other religious communities engage in exchange on the topic commonly known as 'Imam training'. It was a two-day event with podium discussions, lectures and discussion sessions where the status and perspectives of the qualifications were examined. The conference also served as an occasion for the debut presentation of the DIK guide on 'Recognition of Careers and Qualification Programmes for Religious Staff in Islamic Communities'. A DIK project group had previously developed the contents of this guide as part of a one-year process.

2024.05.27 DIK expert meeting on antisemitism

The expert meeting "Antisemitism in Muslim communities – challenges and approaches for action" was held at the Federal Ministry of the Interior with the involvement of Dr Felix Klein, the Federal Government Commissioner for Jewish Life in Germany and the Fight against Antisemitism. The meeting was attended by numerous Muslim stakeholders and institutions, many of which have for years been actively engaged in the fight against antisemitism. Jewish and Muslim participants in the interreligious dialogue and government representatives were also present.
